UNITY CALLS ON HOWARD TO EXPRESS SORROW FOR DEATH OF ASYLUM SEEKERS |
“John Howard and Kim Beazley must show sorrow and concern for the tragic loss of life of 350 asylum seekers,” said Bill Cope, Unity Party Senate candidate.
“The Australian public must be shown that asylum seekers are human beings and their death is as tragic as the death of any other person.
“Instead Howard seems more concerned about showing the public how tough he can be on asylum seekers.
“The tough measures of the Government have done nothing to stop the flow of boat people, and did not prevent the deaths of these people.
“The major parties must now look at ways to solve the international refugee crisis by working with other countries. With the war in Afghanistan continuing, the number of refugees in the region will only increase.
“The Government has spent a great deal of time painting the asylum seekers as bad people and this has caused considerable racism in the community,” said Mr Cope.
